THE WIZ (1978) — THE CROWS
Character & Symbolism
Slick, cynical street hustlers clad in fedoras, shades, and feathers, the Crows personify the oppressive forces and internalized doubts that keep the Scarecrow (Michael Jackson) trapped on his pole. Rather than a physical barrier, they represent systemic cynicism, peer ridicule, and defeatism—conditioning him to believe he is powerless and devoid of worth.
"You Can't Win"
Their biting anthem lays down the rules of a rigged game: striving is futile, so why bother trying? Through the song, the Crows enforce mental shackles on the Scarecrow, convincing him to accept his lot. The performance highlights Jackson’s raw, stifled potential—until Dorothy intervenes, exposing the Crows' power as an illusion and sparking his escape.
