Xochiquetzal (Show-chee-ket-zal) means ‘Precious Feather Flower’; Aztecs named her Ichpochtli, which means ‘maiden’. Worshipers of Xochiquetzal celebrated her with a festival every eight years, during which they wore animal and flower masks. She was associated with love, beauty, pleasure and linked to artisans such as artists, silversmiths and weavers. Her iconography often showed her holding a bouquet of flowers or weaving tools. She was depicted as an alluring and youthful woman, and her patronage extended to luxury items. Her marriages included Tlaloc, Tezcatlipoca, Centeotl and Xiuhtecuhtli.
